Update: letter to PM sent today + comms materials

12 August 2026

As you may be aware from Seen and Heard, Nagalro, together with many other children's charities and supporters of children's rights, have been pressing the government to legislate for mandatory children's rights impact assessments for all legislation. This is not only required by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRR) but was also recommended by Baroness Hallett in her Covid-19 enquiry.

A letter has been sent to the new Prime Minister from Just for Kids Law, repeating this request and signed by Nagalro and more than 70 other bodies.

Please click here for a copy of the letter.

With very best wishes

Children's organisations call on Prime Minister to put children's rights at the heart of government

More than 70 organisations have written to new Prime Minister Andy Burnham calling for stronger protections for children's rights and a clear roadmap towards incorporating the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into UK law.

The letter urges the government to place Child Rights Impact Assessments (CRIAs) on a statutory footing, in line with recommendations from the UK COVID-19 Inquiry, and to ensure children's rights are embedded across policymaking as part of its ambition to build a more preventative state.

The coalition argues that these reforms would help ensure children's rights, interests and voices are consistently considered in decisions affecting their lives.

Long form post

More than 70 organisations have come together to write to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, calling for children's rights to be placed at the heart of government decision-making.

Our joint message is clear: if the government is serious about building a more preventative state, it must ensure children's rights are properly considered across policy and legislation.

We're calling on the government to:

✅ Put Child Rights Impact Assessments (CRIAs) on a statutory footing, as recommended by the UK COVID-19 Inquiry

✅ Set out a roadmap towards incorporating the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into UK law

✅ Ensure children's voices and rights are consistently considered in decisions that affect their lives

A stronger focus on children's rights would help government identify risks earlier, improve outcomes and ensure children and young people's voices are heard. Read more about the coalition's call here: https://bit.ly/4go6Rk9
