DESCRIPTION:NAGALRO AUTUMN 2025 ONLINE CONFERENCE \n\n‘Children who slip through the net’ \n\n \n\nFriday\, 10 October 2025\, 09.30 am – 13.30 pm\n\n \n\nThis conference hopes to examine\n\nThe level and prominence of children who not only slip through the net by their needs not being recognised and given due consideration\; hence continuing to endure neglect in all areas of their life throughout their childhood.  We aim to examine the consequences for children but also the long lasting impact of such neglect.We examine the continuing neglect during care proceedings when the assumption is that the issue is merely about “cleaning up’ rather than the factors that led to neglect in the first place. How traditional views of neglect continues to allow children slip through the net?The impact of cultural factors in concealing child abuse\, identifying the particular circumstances in the case of Sara Sharif and how these assumptions contribute to harm for children from ethnic minorities.The consideration of Neglect as a psychological construct.What we can learn from the Research Experience undertaken in the Republic Ireland on children falling through the “cracks” in care proceedings.The highly experienced presenters who will challenge and hopefully channel our thinking have been chosen from differing perspectives and include:\n\nConference Chair \n\nThe Conference Chair is Elpha LeCointe\, barrister at One Garden Court Chambers\, and deputy District Judge of the Family Division sitting in London and holding tickets in Private and Public law. Speakers\n\nSir Andrew McFarlane\, President of the Family Division has agreed to speak at the conference and give a broad overview on children who slip through the net.Dr Dominique Newsome\, Psychologist will speak about "Neglect as a psychological construct."Dr Maria Corbett\, Children’s Rights Alliance (Republic of Ireland) to present on two research studies she co-authored\, “Falling Through the Cracks: An Analysis of Child Care Proceedings from 2021 to 2024" (Child Law Project) and the 2025 “Report of the External Review Group on Special Care” (commissioned by the Child and Family Agency\, Tusla). She will discuss key findings about neglect and practical lessons for professionals.Genet Amare\, solicitor.  Drawing from both professional expertise and lived experience\, Genet will explore how children ‘slip through the net’ when their holistic and cultural needs are overlooked\, and the life-altering consequences that follow. Her talk will highlight the systemic and cultural silences that can obscure abuse\, particularly within diaspora communities\, and the urgent need for professionals to listen deeply to children’s voices.
